Frequently asked questions
How do you play the book Higher or Lower game?
Pick a category — Romantasy, Fantasy or Romance. You'll see one book with its Goodreads rating revealed, and a second book with its rating hidden. Guess whether the second book's rating is higher or lower. Guess right and it keeps going; guess wrong and your streak ends.
Where do the Goodreads ratings come from?
Goodreads' rating averages, curated and refreshed periodically (currently as of early 2026). Goodreads doesn't offer a public ratings API, so these are approximate, rounded snapshots rather than a live feed — treat exact decimals as ballpark, not real-time.
What categories can I play?
Romantasy (fae courts, dragon riders and morally grey love interests), Fantasy (epic quests and magic systems), and Romance (contemporary and historical love stories). More categories are added over time.
Can I share my streak?
Yes — when your run ends, download a branded result card showing your streak and the book covers you passed, ready to post on Reddit, Instagram or TikTok.
Is the Higher or Lower book game free?
Yes, completely free with no account needed. Book covers come from a live book database.
